The most iconic pen in history takes its name from the year of its creation: in 1939, the Parker company celebrated its 51st anniversary.
The Parker 51 owes much to the influence of Moholy-Nagy, the celebrated artist of the "Bauhaus", where Klee and Kandinsky worked. Émigrés from this German school of applied arts were driven out of Germany by Hitler and settled in Chicago, where they shaped American aesthetics.
Tested in Brazil in 1939-40 without much success, the Parker 51 was launched in the United States in 1941, where it became a true symbol.
Six assets forged the legend of the Parker 51: Quink, a high-velocity ink that dried instantly; Lucite, a moulded plastic immune to the corrosive power of ink; a hooded nib that prevented ink from evaporating on the nib; a point with no visible nib and no line variation, which glided at great speed across the paper; an integrated, aerodynamic line harmonised with Platt's arrow clip; and finally Vacumatic filling, replaced in 1947 by the Aerometric, a very robust transparent plastic reservoir derived from the sleeve filler.
