Receive a selection for youThe Parker "61" pen was launched in the United States in 1956 as the successor to the Parker "51", in response to the release of Sheaffer's "Snorkel". Parker "61": almost identical to the 51, fitted with a new capillary filling system with no moving parts, a world first.
A fountain pen that could fill itself and write immediately afterwards, with no risk of leaks, smudges or blots. Parker thus hoped to compete with the ballpoint pen.
Inside the pen, a tube contains a roll of plasticised paper, fully perforated and notched to retain the ink. At the end of the tube, 3 openings of spongy material draw up the ink and send it to the roll.
But this ingenious mechanism was fragile and of uncertain reliability. It was soon replaced by a cartridge filling system. It was a commercial failure.
